Having a fire extinguisher is only half the solution. Knowing how to use it calmly and correctly is what makes the difference.

The most widely taught method is the PASS technique:

P – Pull the safety pin
This breaks the tamper seal and allows the extinguisher to discharge.

A – Aim at the base of the fire
Never aim at the flames. The fuel source is what needs to be neutralised.

S – Squeeze the handle
This releases the extinguishing agent under pressure.

S – Sweep from side to side
Move across the base of the fire until it is fully out.

Important safety reminders:
• Always keep an exit behind you
• Never fight a fire that is spreading rapidly
• If in doubt, evacuate immediately
• Only use the correct extinguisher for the fire class

Regular inspections and servicing ensure that when someone pulls that pin, the extinguisher works exactly as expected. A blocked nozzle, low pressure, or expired unit can turn confidence into chaos.

Training, signage, and maintenance work together. Remove one, and the system weakens.
