When does a fire extinguisher get rejected according to SANS 1475?Reject any extinguisher cylinder if it meets any of the following conditions: a) Repaired through soldering, brazing, welding, or patching components. b) Displays damaged screw threads. c) Shows excessive corrosion, damage, or unauthorized markings other than those specified by the manufacturer. d) Has been subjected to fire damage. e) Made of stainless steel and used with a calcium chloride extinguishing medium (as water and powder with high chloride content may not be compatible). f) Constructed of copper or brass joined with soft solder, rivets, or non-metallic material (their safety cannot be determined through standard pressure testing). g) Unable to be maintained according to the original manufacturer's requirements. h) Does not comply with SABS standards.

How many fire extinguishers are required for my premises?The number of fire extinguishers needed, will depend on the occupancy classification as per the following tables as contained in National Building Regulations (SANS 10400). Based on the occupancy class the following number of fire extinguishers is prescribed for each occupancy class.

How often do I need to inspect or service my fire extinguisher as per regulations?Fire equipment should be serviced every 12 months by a certified company. The servicing must be performed by a technician registered with SAQCC. Additionally, the company employing the technician must be registered with either BSI or SABS.

How can I ensure that the technician maintaining my fire protection equipment is adequately qualified and competent?Make sure that the technician you're working with possesses a SAQCC-fire ID card and is affiliated with the company listed on the card. It's against regulations for a SAQCC-fire technician to operate under a company name different from what's stated on their card.
